当代日本版画家

Surveying contemporary Japanese printmakers working in a wide range of techniques, including color woodblocks, etchings, mezzotints, lithographs, and screenprints, HANGA现在 highlights the artists’ diversity, creativity, and sensitivity to materials. These contemporary artists are successors to Japan’s early 20th century 年代ōsaku hanga (creative print) movement. Inspired by the Western approach to original prints in which the artist executes every stage – from design of the image and preparation and inking of the matrix to final printing on paper in a limited edition – this movement diverged from the traditional process of creating 世绘 prints and 20th-century shin-hanga (new print) works, which involved collaboration among separate designers, block carvers, printers, and publishers.

Major artists in the exhibition include TAMEKANE Yoshikatsu, IWAMI Reika, SHINODA Toko, IMAMURA Yoshio, NAKAZAWA Shin’ichi, and HAMANISHI Katsunori.

In conjunction with HANGA现在, artist TAMEKANE Yoshikatsu will visit from Japan on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016 to demonstrate printing techniques, including shading with water-based inks (bokashi), application of metallic leaf, and embossing, all of which he uses in his own work. 这一论证得到了浅野Emi的部分支持。 圣约瑟夫大学艺术博物馆还将于2016年10月16日下午1-3点举办家庭日活动,为儿童和成人举办与展览相关的活动,以及两次画廊讲座——一次在10月6日,另一次在12月1日下午5:30。

This exhibition features wood engravings by renowned artist Thomas Nast drawn from the museum’s permanent collection. 纳斯特被称为美国政治漫画的教父,他对19世纪一些最重要的问题施加了影响。 Numerous economic challenges faced the U.S. in the 1870s and 1880s, among them a Wall Street collapse, a long depression, labor disputes, and conflict over paper money and inflation – and Thomas Nast addressed them all in the pages of Harper’s Weekly. This exhibition, which celebrates the inauguration of President Rhona Free, Ph.D. in economics, examines Nast’s trenchant commentary on the economic controversies of his day.

小脸:小型肖像

这次展览展出了美国和欧洲的小型绘画和版画。 Of particular interest are early 20th century miniature portraits by Elsie Dodge Pattee, which are on long-term loan to the Museum from the artist’s family. Drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection the exhibition also includes work by Rembrandt, Mary Cassatt, James Whistler, and others.
